Android 6.0 Marshmallow: When is it coming to my phone?

Google has announced that its next mobile operating system update will be called Andorid 6.0 Marshmallow.

As is tradition, Google will release new Nexus devices with the latest OS preloaded, first. These are expected to arrive in the forms of new Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 replacements, currently expected from LG and Huawei respectively. But any new Android release kicks off the furore surrounding upgrades. When will I get Android Marshmallow? Who will get Marchmallow first? We're pulling all the details together so you have one easy stop to see when you'll get your next Android upgrade for your smartphone or tablet.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow release date

This is a key date in the calendar and one that has yet to be revealed. Google has, however, released the Android 6.0 SDK, as well as the final developer preview, so it's close. That means we're likely to see the final consumer launch of new Nexus devices with the new OS shortly.

Currently it's expected that we'll see Marshmallow officially launch in October 2015.

Following the launch on new Nexus devices, Google has to release Android 6.0 Marshmallow. It's at this point that manufacturers can then work with it to upgrade their existing devices and the great race begins

Android 6.0 Marshmallow update: Nexus devices

Following the launch of the new Nexus devices with Android 6.0 Marshmallow, we're expecting a small pause before the new software is released for existing Nexus devices. This might be the case of a weeks or maybe a month if you're waiting for the OTA update - and it depends where you are in the world. However, Google often makes the files available on the Andorid Developer's website for those who want to manually upgrade themselves. Nexus devices are almost always first in line for the update. But what Nexus devices will get Android 6.0 Marshmallow?

Google is yet to confirm which handsets will receive Android 6.0 Marshmallow, but we'd expect the Nexus 5 (2013), Nexus 6 (2014) and Nexus 9 to be the first in line. All these devices have been on the Android M preview. Whether the Nexus 7, Nexus 10 and Nexus 4 will be updated remains to be seen - it's unlikely. Then there will be updates for the Nexus Player too, as we skip over to Android TV on Marshmallow.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow update: HTC

Unlike the other manufacturers out there, HTC operates a 90-day promise for updates, as well as promising that your device will be updated for 2 years following its release. In reality, 90 days is a target and some might get that update, while others might have to wait a little longer as it rolls-out in different regions. Last year the 90-day period began on 4 November, one day after the OS was released by Google. Roll-out started on 28 January. If the same happens this year HTC users can expect to get Android 6.0 Marshmallow in a similar time frame, January 2016.

HTC should update the HTC One M9 and One M8, although we suspect M7's 2013 launch might see it slip out of the upgrade promise. HTC has previously confirmed that the One M8 will be upgraded to Marshmallow, as well as tweeting to say that M9 and M9+ are on the upgrade list.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow update: Huawei

Huawei is often a little slower than other manufacturers to update devices. Huawei doesn't have quite the high profile as other Android manufacturers yet, but that might change with the launch of a Huawei Nexus handset. That might also supercharge the Chinese company, encouraging it to bring the update to devices like the P8.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow update: LG

LG was quick to begin rolling out its Lollipop update, one of the first to get an update out - and in Poland, no less. The Lollipop release date of 3 November was followed by an LG update on 10 November. It made minimal changes, however, to the existing LG G3 experience. LG has yet to confirm plans for updating to Marshmallow, but you can expect the LG G4 and LG G3 to be included. We will update as soon as LG says anything.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow update: Motorola

Motorola is a fast mover when it comes to Android updates. Thanks to minimal additions on devices, Motorola has sometimes updated as fast, or even faster, than some Nexus models. With more devices, however, Motorola now has a wider portfolio to update. There's no official word on when the Motorola Andorid update might come, but we'd expect Moto E, Moto G and Moto X models to get updated.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow update: Samsung

While Samsung may announce an update rolling out soon, it often takes a while to actually arrive. Last OS update, Samsung had its version rolling out 31 days after the Google launch. But not all phones actually got it right away. Variations in network can play a role here, and some see quite a delay.

Website YouMobile claims to have been leaked the following list of devices, confirmed for the Marshmallow update: Samsung Galaxy Note 5, Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+, Samsung Galaxy S6, Samsung Galaxy S6 Duos, Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Duos, Samsung Galaxy Note Edge, Samsung Galaxy Alpha, Samsung Galaxy Tab A.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow update: Sony Xperia

Sony took a few months to roll out the Lollipop update, so don't expect to get the Marshmallow update soon after the official release. Sony's entire Xperia Z family should get the update if the company follows last year's offering, but it might take most of the year to get there. We will update as soon as there are any confirmations of timeline for Android 6.0 Marshmallow updates.
